Holding on to God's promises
Holding On to the Ladder
A Promise Harbor Bible Study on Faith, Perseverance, and God’s Promises
Anchor Verse
“And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.” — Genesis 28:12 (KJV)
Harbor Reflection
Most people would choose a stairway over a ladder.
A stairway is easier. You can walk casually up a stairway. You can climb a stairway while carrying distractions. A stairway requires little effort.
A ladder is different.
A ladder requires both hands. It demands focus. It requires commitment. Every step upward requires trust. Every rung must be gripped firmly.
When God gave Jacob a vision connecting Heaven and Earth, He chose a ladder.
Years later, Jacob would find himself wrestling through the night, refusing to let go until God blessed him.
Together, these two events teach us an important lesson:
God gives promises, but we must hold on to them.
Faith is not standing at the bottom admiring God’s promises. Faith is climbing one rung at a time and refusing to let go when the storm comes.
Opening Prayer
Father, thank You for Your Word and Your promises. Open our hearts and minds as we study Scripture. Help us understand what You want us to learn. Strengthen our faith and teach us to hold tightly to You when life becomes difficult. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Recovery Reflection
Many people in recovery know what it feels like to fall.
Many know what it feels like to relapse.
Many know what it feels like to wonder whether change is possible.
The ladder reminds us that recovery is often climbed one rung at a time.
One day.
One prayer.
One meeting.
One act of obedience.
One step closer to Christ.
Do not become discouraged because you have not reached the top.
Focus on the next rung.
God is not asking you to climb the whole ladder today.
He is asking you to trust Him with the next step.
Harbor Challenge
This week:
Write down three promises of God that apply to your current situation.
Read them every morning and every evening.
When fear, temptation, anxiety, or discouragement appears, read those promises aloud.
Ask yourself:
“Am I staring at the ladder, or am I climbing it?”
Memory Verse
“Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)” — Hebrews 10:23
Closing Prayer
Lord, thank You for Your promises. Thank You for being faithful even when we are weak. Help us hold tightly to You when life becomes difficult. Give us strength when we are tired, courage when we are afraid, and faith when we cannot see the path ahead. Teach us to keep climbing, one rung at a time, trusting that You are with us every step of the way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
