Chapter Overview
Life is filled with battles.
Some are fought against visible enemies.
Others are fought within our own hearts.
There are battles against temptation...
Against fear...
Against discouragement...
Against uncertainty...
Against grief...
Against sin itself.
God has never promised that His people would never face conflict.
He has promised that they would never face it alone.
In this chapter we discover three beautiful names that reveal God's continual care for His people.
Jehovah Nissi reminds us that God fights for His people and gives them victory.
Jehovah Shalom reminds us that true peace is found only in His presence.
Jehovah Rohi reminds us that the Lord lovingly shepherds, protects, and guides His flock every day.
Together these names reveal that our God is not distant.
He goes before us in battle...
He calms our fears...
And He faithfully leads us every step of life's journey.

Jehovah Nissi — The LORD Our Banner
The name Jehovah Nissi first appears during Israel's battle against Amalek.
Fresh from their deliverance from Egypt, Israel suddenly found themselves under attack.
Rather than trusting their own strength alone, Moses climbed a nearby hill carrying the rod of God.
As long as Moses held up his hands, Israel prevailed.
When his hands grew weary and fell, Amalek gained ground.
Aaron and Hur stood beside Moses and helped support his arms until sunset.
Israel won the battle.
Afterward, Moses built an altar.
"And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi."
— Exodus 17:15 (KJV)
The word "banner" refers to a standard carried into battle.
It identified the army.
It united the soldiers.
It gave them a visible point around which to gather.
By calling God Jehovah Nissi, Moses declared that Israel's victory had not come because of military strength.
Their victory came because the Lord Himself went before them.

Our Battles Are Spiritual
Most believers today will never stand on a battlefield with sword and shield.
Yet every Christian is engaged in spiritual warfare.
Paul reminds us,
"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers..."
— Ephesians 6:12 (KJV)
The enemy seeks to discourage...
Tempt...
Divide...
Accuse...
And destroy.
Our victory is never found in human ability.
Like Israel, our confidence rests in the Lord.
Jehovah Nissi reminds us that every victory belongs to Him.
When we stand beneath His banner, we fight with confidence because the battle ultimately belongs to the Lord.

Jehovah Shalom — The LORD Our Peace
The next name appears during one of the darkest periods in Israel's history.
The Midianites oppressed God's people.
Fear filled the land.
Many Israelites hid in caves to survive.
It was during this fearful time that the Angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon.
Although Gideon saw himself as weak and insignificant, God called him to deliver Israel.
Terrified by the encounter, Gideon feared he would die.
But the Lord reassured him.
"Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die."
— Judges 6:23 (KJV)
In response,
"Then Gideon built an altar there unto the LORD, and called it Jehovahshalom."
— Judges 6:24 (KJV)
Notice something remarkable.
God did not first remove every problem.
The Midianites were still there.
The battle still lay ahead.
Yet God gave Gideon peace before He gave him victory.
That is often God's way.
His peace is not dependent upon perfect circumstances.
His peace comes from His presence.

The Peace Christ Gives
Centuries later, Jesus made an astonishing promise.
"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you."
— John 14:27 (KJV)
The world offers temporary peace.
Financial security.
Good health.
Comfortable circumstances.
All of these can disappear overnight.
The peace Christ gives remains even when life becomes difficult.
It is rooted in the unchanging character of God.
Because Jehovah Shalom never changes, His peace can guard our hearts even in the middle of life's greatest storms.

Jehovah Rohi — The LORD My Shepherd
Perhaps no picture of God's care is more beloved than that of the Shepherd.
David, himself a shepherd, understood this better than anyone.
He wrote,
"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want."
— Psalm 23:1 (KJV)
Sheep are completely dependent upon their shepherd.
They cannot safely guide themselves.
They depend upon the shepherd for food...
Water...
Protection...
Guidance...
And rescue.
David recognized that this perfectly described his own relationship with God.
The Lord led him beside still waters.
Restored his soul.
Guided him in righteousness.
Protected him in the valley of the shadow of death.
Prepared a table before him.
Pursued him with goodness and mercy.
Jehovah Rohi is not merely a guide.
He is a faithful caretaker who never abandons His flock.

Jesus the Good Shepherd
The New Testament reveals the complete fulfillment of this beautiful picture.
Jesus declared,
"I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep."
— John 10:11 (KJV)
Unlike hired servants who flee when danger comes, the Good Shepherd willingly laid down His life for His sheep.
He knows them personally.
He calls them by name.
He leads them.
Protects them.
Feeds them.
And promises,
"My sheep hear my voice..."
"And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish..."
— John 10:27–28 (KJV)
The Shepherd who walked the hills of Galilee is the same Shepherd who watches over believers today.
He has never lost one of His own.

Three Beautiful Pictures of God's Care
These three names beautifully complement one another.
Jehovah Nissi reminds us that God fights for us.
Jehovah Shalom reminds us that God calms our hearts.
Jehovah Rohi reminds us that God lovingly leads us.
He is our Banner in battle.
Our Peace in uncertainty.
Our Shepherd throughout life's journey.
Whatever challenges we face...
Whatever valleys we enter...
Whatever enemies oppose us...
We are never abandoned.
The Lord Himself goes before us.
Walks beside us.
And promises to bring His people safely home.

• What battle am I trying to fight in my own strength instead of trusting Jehovah Nissi?
• Am I seeking peace through changing circumstances rather than through Jehovah Shalom?
• How can I more faithfully follow the voice of my Shepherd today?

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for revealing Yourself as my Banner, my Peace, and my Shepherd. Thank You for fighting battles I cannot win alone, for calming fears that overwhelm my heart, and for faithfully leading me throughout every season of life.
Help me to trust You more fully when conflict comes. Teach me to rest in the peace that only You can give and to follow the voice of my Shepherd with willing obedience. Thank You for Your promise that You will never leave nor forsake Your people.

Looking Ahead
In the next chapter we will examine three magnificent names that reveal God's righteousness, His sovereign authority over Heaven's armies, and His abiding presence with His people: Jehovah Tsidkenu, Jehovah Sabaoth, and Jehovah Shammah. Together they remind us that the God who justifies His people also reigns over every power in Heaven and earth and promises to dwell with His people forever.
