WHY GOD'S NAMES MATTER

Chapter Overview
Throughout Scripture, God reveals Himself through many names. Each one unveils another aspect of His perfect character, allowing us to know Him more deeply. His names are never random, poetic embellishments, or titles invented by men. Rather, they are divine revelations that teach us who He is, how He works, and how He desires His people to know Him.
Before we examine individual names such as Jehovah Jireh, Jehovah Rapha, or the great declaration "I AM," we must first understand why God chose to reveal Himself through many names. This chapter establishes that foundation. It will help us understand why biblical names carried such significance, why God progressively revealed His character throughout history, and why these names remain vital for believers today.
The purpose of this study is not simply to increase our knowledge of biblical terminology. Its purpose is to deepen our relationship with the God who graciously revealed Himself to mankind.

Why This Matters
If someone asked you to describe God using only one word, what would you say?
Would you say He is loving?
Would you say He is holy?
Would you say He is faithful?
Would you say He is just?
Each answer would be true.
Yet none of them would fully describe Him.
The infinite God cannot be adequately summarized by a single human description. Instead of leaving mankind to speculate about His nature, God chose to reveal Himself throughout history. He unfolded His character little by little, allowing each generation to experience another aspect of His greatness.
One of the primary ways He accomplished this was through His names.
Every name tells a story.
Every name reveals His character.
Every name reminds His people of His faithfulness.
When Abraham stood upon Mount Moriah facing the greatest test of his life, God revealed Himself as Jehovah Jireh—the LORD who provides.
When Israel wandered through the wilderness needing healing, He revealed Himself as Jehovah Rapha—the LORD who heals.
When frightened hearts longed for peace, He became known as Jehovah Shalom—the LORD our peace.
God did not merely speak these names.
He demonstrated them.
His people learned who He was because they experienced His faithfulness firsthand.
That same invitation remains today.
God still desires to be known—not merely as an idea or theological concept, but as the living God whose character never changes.

Names Meant More Than Identification
In today's culture, names are often chosen because they sound pleasant, honor family members, or simply reflect personal preference.
While they certainly carry meaning for many families, names seldom define a person's character or purpose.
Biblical culture was remarkably different.
Throughout Scripture, names frequently communicated identity, mission, destiny, or significant events surrounding a person's life.
Abram became Abraham because God established His covenant with him, making him "a father of many nations" (Genesis 17:5).
Jacob, whose name reflected one who grasped or supplanted, became Israel after wrestling with God and experiencing a life-changing transformation (Genesis 32:28).
Hoshea became Joshua, meaning "The LORD is salvation," foreshadowing the greater salvation that would one day come through Jesus Christ.
Even our Lord's earthly name carried divine purpose.
Before Jesus was born, the angel instructed Joseph,
"Thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins."

His name revealed His mission.
Scripture repeatedly demonstrates that names mattered because they often reflected God's work in a person's life.
If names carried such importance for ordinary men and women, how much greater is the significance of the names by which Almighty God chose to reveal Himself?

God Revealed His Character Progressively
One of the beautiful features of Scripture is that God did not reveal every aspect of His character all at once.
Instead, He revealed Himself progressively.
As history unfolded, God disclosed another facet of His glory exactly when His people needed it most.
To Abraham, He became the God who provides.
To Moses, He revealed Himself as the eternal I AM.
To David, He became the Shepherd.
To the prophets, He promised His abiding presence.
Each revelation came at precisely the right moment.
These names were not invented by people attempting to describe God.
They were revealed by God Himself as He demonstrated His own character through real historical events.
Every miracle...
Every covenant...
Every act of mercy...
Every judgment...
Every promise fulfilled...
added another brushstroke to the magnificent portrait God was painting of Himself throughout Scripture.
Today, believers possess the privilege of seeing the completed picture. Looking from Genesis through Revelation, we can recognize how each name contributes to one unified revelation of the unchanging God.

Names and Titles
As we progress through this study, we will encounter both names and titles.
While they often work together, they are not always the same.
A title generally describes an office, responsibility, or position.
Examples include:
• King
• Shepherd
• Judge
• Redeemer
• Savior
A name, however, reveals identity.
When God declared,
"I AM THAT I AM."
— Exodus 3:14 (KJV)
He was revealing His eternal nature.
Likewise, when Jesus declared,
"I am the good shepherd."
— John 10:11 (KJV)
He was revealing not only His role but His relationship to His people while fulfilling the Shepherd imagery woven throughout the Old Testament.
Throughout this study, we will examine both names and titles because together they reveal the fullness of God's character and His work of redemption.

Every Name Leads Us to Christ
As we journey through Scripture, one truth becomes increasingly clear.
Every revelation of God's character ultimately points us to Jesus Christ.
The Creator is revealed in Christ.
The Shepherd is fulfilled in Christ.
The Redeemer is fulfilled in Christ.
The Provider finds His greatest expression in Christ.
The presence of God comes to dwell among mankind in Christ.
The New Testament does not replace God's Old Testament names.
Rather, it brings them into their fullest expression through Jesus Christ.
Peter boldly proclaimed,
"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."
— Acts 4:12 (KJV)
To study God's names, therefore, is much more than an academic exercise.
It is an invitation to know the God who revealed Himself throughout history and ultimately made Himself known through His Son.
Every chapter that follows will reveal another aspect of His character.
Every name will remind us that the God of Abraham, Moses, David, Isaiah, Peter, and Paul is the very same God who faithfully walks with His people today.

Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for revealing Yourself through Your Word. Thank You that You have not remained distant or unknowable, but have graciously made Yourself known through Your names and ultimately through Your Son, Jesus Christ.
As I begin this study, give me a heart that longs not merely for knowledge, but for a deeper relationship with You. Help me to see Your faithfulness throughout Scripture, to trust Your promises more completely, and to worship You with greater understanding.
May every chapter lead me closer to knowing You as You truly are.

Looking Ahead
In the next chapter we will stand beside Moses before the burning bush and examine one of the most sacred moments in all of Scripture. There God reveals His covenant name, "I AM THAT I AM."
