CHAPTER 10 — HEAVEN: THE ETERNAL HOME OF THE REDEEMED

Introduction
For countless generations, people have wondered, What is Heaven really like?
Songs have imagined it.
Artists have painted it.
Poets have described it.
Yet no human imagination can fully capture the glory of what God has prepared for those who love Him.
Many people picture Heaven as little more than clouds, harps, and endless rest. The Bible presents something far richer. Heaven is not an escape from life—it is the fullness of life as God intended it from the beginning.
It is the home of God.
The dwelling place of Christ.
The inheritance of the redeemed.
The place where every longing of the human heart finds its perfect fulfillment in the presence of its Creator.
Jesus Prepared a Place
On the night before His crucifixion, Jesus comforted His disciples with one of Scripture's greatest promises.
"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
In my Father's house are many mansions...
I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also."
John 14:1–3
Heaven is not merely a destination.
It is a place personally prepared by Jesus Christ Himself.
The greatest joy of Heaven will never be its beauty, but its Builder.
The Presence of God
The defining characteristic of Heaven is not its streets of gold or gates of pearl.
It is the presence of God.
Throughout history, sin separated mankind from God's immediate presence.
In Heaven, that separation is forever removed.
John writes,
"Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them..."
Revelation 21:3
The greatest promise in Scripture is not simply that we go to Heaven.
It is that we will be with Him.
Every desire for love, peace, security, belonging, and joy ultimately finds its answer in the presence of God.
A Place Without Suffering
One of the most comforting descriptions of Heaven appears in Revelation.
"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes..."
Revelation 21:4
Notice what follows.
No more death.
No more sorrow.
No more crying.
No more pain.
No hospitals.
No funerals.
No broken homes.
No loneliness.
No depression.
No fear.
No anxiety.
No violence.
No abuse.
No disease.
No aging.
No goodbyes.
Everything sin introduced into God's creation will finally be removed forever.
A Place of Perfect Holiness
Nothing sinful enters Heaven.
John writes,
"And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth..."
Revelation 21:27
This is not because Heaven is exclusive.
It is because God is holy.
Only those whose sins have been washed away through the blood of Jesus Christ may enter.
Our confidence rests entirely upon His righteousness, not our own.
Will We Know One Another?
Scripture strongly indicates that relationships continue in eternity.
The disciples recognized Moses and Elijah.
The disciples recognized the risen Christ.
Believers are repeatedly described as being gathered together.
Paul comforted grieving Christians with the assurance that they would be reunited.
"And so shall we ever be with the Lord."
1 Thessalonians 4:17
Heaven is not the loss of relationships.
It is the perfection of them.
Every relationship will be purified of selfishness, misunderstanding, jealousy, pride, and sin.
Love will finally become everything God intended it to be.
What Will We Do in Heaven?
Many imagine Heaven as endless inactivity.
The Bible paints a much richer picture.
We will worship.
We will serve.
We will reign with Christ.
We will learn.
We will rejoice.
We will enjoy perfect fellowship with God's people.
We will marvel forever at the wisdom and goodness of our Creator.
John declares,
"His servants shall serve him."
Revelation 22:3
Service in Heaven will no longer be burdened by fatigue, frustration, or failure.
Everything we do will bring joy.
The New Jerusalem
John describes the holy city descending from God.
Its brilliance is beyond earthly comparison.
Its walls are adorned with precious stones.
Its gates are fashioned from pearls.
Its streets are described as pure gold, transparent like glass.
Yet these magnificent descriptions point beyond material beauty.
The city reflects the glory of the One who dwells within it.
No Need for Sun or Temple
John records two remarkable truths.
First,
"I saw no temple therein..."
Revelation 21:22
God Himself is the temple.
There is no separation between worship and life.
Every moment becomes worship.
Second,
"The city had no need of the sun... for the glory of God did lighten it, and the Lamb is the light thereof."
Revelation 21:23
The glory of God illuminates everything.
There is no darkness where Christ reigns.
The Greatest Joy of Heaven
While Scripture gives glimpses of Heaven's beauty, its greatest treasure is neither the city nor its streets.
It is Jesus Christ.
Faith becomes sight.
Hope becomes reality.
The Savior whom believers trusted without seeing will stand before them forever.
David expressed the longing of every redeemed heart:
"In thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore."
Psalm 16:11
Every earthly joy is only a shadow.
In Christ, we will experience the substance.
Living with Heaven in View
The promise of Heaven changes how Christians live today.
We hold earthly possessions loosely.
We endure suffering patiently.
We grieve with hope.
We forgive more readily.
We labor faithfully.
We share the gospel urgently.
Paul reminds us,
"For our conversation is in heaven..."
Philippians 3:20
Our citizenship already belongs to another kingdom.
Though we serve faithfully on earth, our true home is with Christ.
Looking Ahead
The Bible reveals that God's eternal plan extends beyond Heaven as we often imagine it.
Scripture speaks of a New Heaven, a New Earth, and the complete restoration of creation itself.
